A friend sent this to me a while ago and I just loved it. As it was originally written quite a long time ago, I took liberty to change some of the verses to make them a little more applicable to me…
Mother oh Mother come take up your cloth
Hang out the laundry and mend up the socks
Clear off the table and mix up the bread
Finish the sweeping and make up the beds.
Where is the mother whose house is so shocking?
She’s up in the nursery, blissfully rocking.
Oh I’ve grown as shiftless as Little Boy Blue
Dishes are waiting and bills are past due
The shoppings not done and there’s nothing for stew
And out in the yard there’s a hullaballo.
But I’m playing kanga, and this is my roo.
Look! Aren’t his eyes the most wonderful hue?
The cleaning and scrubbing can waith till tomorrow
For children grow up, as I’ve learned to my sorrow.
So quiet down cobwebs, dust go to sleep
I’m rocking my baby and babies don’t keep.
